A&J Prototyping and Tooling, Inc. was founded by Richard Avila. As the owner and lead machinist, he brings over 28 years of experience working in the aerospace, chemical, and hydraulic industries using CNC programming and conventional machining working with CNC mills, engine lathes, Bridgeport mills, Cincinnati mills, shapers, and ARC and MIG welding.
I was born and raised in Mexico City. I have been taking things apart, and fixing things, most of my life. At the age of 9, I took my bicycle apart several times. I was fascinated with how each part worked and enjoyed the process of taking it apart and putting it back together. By the age of 15, I removed the engine of a Volkswagen my family owned to change the clutch.
After high school, in 1986, I joined a pilot program, CECIQ (Training Center for the Chemical Industry), provided by the collaboration between Hoechst, Bayer, BASF, and Volkswagen in Mexico. It was a vocational program to educate and provide hands on training to students in the fields of machining, welding, electrical, plumbing, and industrial maintenance. I was certified in all those fields and earned a certificate in Industrial maintenance in 1989.
In 1991, I moved to California. I was employed by a small family owned machine shop and enrolled in Machining classes at a local community college. I also took classes in HVAC and Welding and received certification for both. Soon after, I got the opportunity to work in larger companies in hydraulic systems and aerospace industry where I have worked for the last 25 years.
In my experience as a lead machinist, I have seen how companies have relied on overseas companies to meet their machining needs, resulting in costly work and lengthy lead times which many times have resulted in low quality parts that many times are unusable and need to be reworked.
I bring with me over 28 years of experience working for aerospace, chemical, and hydraulic industries. My experience is in both CNC programming and conventional machining working with CNC mills, engine lathes, Bridgeport mills, Cincinatti mills, shapers, and ARC and MIG welding. My education, experience, and innate desire for knowledge and innovation, are what keep me committed to addressing the needs of production and in finding innovative methods and tools in production.
My goal is to bring machining back to America, and produce high quality work
while reducing the costly work and lengthy lead times.
